Jackie Ormes is the first African American female cartoonist. She entertained a audience of blacks threw the years 1937-1956 with her characters Patty Joe, Candy, Torchy Brown and Ginger. Her characters were also shown in black newspaper like The Chicago Defender and Pittsburgh Courier.
